Some Army jobs depend on being fluent in a language besides English. Others can multiply their effectiveness dramatically. Eligibility for Foreign Language Proficiency Pay (FLPP) in some languages requires you work in a language dependent job or a specific job tied to language skills.
LANGUAGE DEPENDENT CAREERS
Interpreter/Translator (09L)
The nation's defense depends on information from foreign language newspapers, magazines, radio broadcasts and other sources. Nowhere is this more important than in the Middle Eastern countries of Iraq and Afghanistan. Currently the Army needs Middle-Eastern language speaking individuals to serve as Interpreter/Translators both on Active Duty and Reserve Duty.
Cryptological Linguist (35P)
Whether it is helping with humanitarian operations to build a school, participate in multi-national training, or anticipate the nation’s next international move – not everyone speaks the same language. It is essential that soldiers in the Army be able to read and understand the many languages of the world.

Signals Intelligence Analyst (35N)

They listen to and intercept foreign radio transmissions and relay that information by producing combat, strategic and tactical intelligence reports.
Human Intelligence Collector (35M)
Having access to the correct information is absolutely necessary to plan for our national defense. Intelligence specialists, such as the Human Intelligence Collector (HUMINT), are integral to providing Army personnel with information about enemy forces and potential battle areas. Even if it is working with a translator or speaking a foreign language directly, this job is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to talking and asking questions.
